B.C.'s Eby promises new tax on millionaires to help pay for health care
The NDP says the bracket would target incomes of $1 million or more, with more details promised later Sunday in Victoria.
- On Sunday, British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby promised a new tax bracket for those earning $1 million or more to help fund public health care, if re-elected ahead of the October 24 provincial election.
- The announcement follows earlier pledges from Eby to implement price guards on groceries and gasoline, while temporarily lowering the provincial motor fuel tax by 10 cents per litre.
- Defending the move, Eby stated his party celebrates financial success but it is right to ask "people who earn a little bit more to pitch-in in a moment like this" when public services are needed.
- Elections BC reports the British Columbia Conservatives are fielding candidates in all 93 ridings, while the New Democrats have 92, the Greens 73, CentreBC 35, and OneBC 33.
- Voters in key ridings face distinct contests, including Peace River North between Independent Jordan Kealy and Conservative Curtis Whitford, and Surrey-South, where the seat formerly held by Brent Chapman is now contested.
