Taxi Impounded for Excessive Speed While Carrying Passenger Who Lost Vehicle to Excessive Speed
B.C. Highway Patrol said 21 vehicles were impounded on the Sea to Sky Highway during Labour Day enforcement.
On Monday, Sept. 7, BCHP officers clocked a Toyota Corolla taxi traveling 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Porteau Cove on the Sea to Sky Highway.
Remarkably, the passenger in the back seat had just lost their own vehicle to an excessive speeding impound, requiring a taxi for their travel plans.
Mounties issued the 65-year-old Squamish driver a $368 ticket and seven-day impound, with escalating insurance premiums and high-risk fees bringing total costs over $2,000.
The taxi incident was one of 21 excessive speeding impounds issued by BCHP on the Sea to Sky Highway during the Labour Day long weekend.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin of the BCHP stated professional drivers do not receive a pass for disobeying the law, while passengers may ask drivers to slow down if uncomfortable.
