Nechirvan Barzani Invites Syrian President to Visit Iraq - Shafaq News
The leaders discussed political, security and economic ties, including Syria’s plan to open a consulate in Erbil and talks on integrating the Syrian Democratic Forces.
- On Monday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani invited Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to visit Baghdad and Erbil during their first official meeting in Damascus, according to Dilshad Shahab, official spokesman for the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
- Previously, Barzani helped the United States broker a January ceasefire between Al-Sharaa and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces commander-in-chief Mazlum Kobane after weeks of fighting saw Kurds lose over 80% of their territory.
- Barzani traveled with Iraqi Kurdish businessmen to boost economic ties, while Syria is moving toward opening a consulate in Erbil and images of a large Kurdish flag at the Damascus presidential complex generated attention.
- Al-Sharaa said the sides discussed enhancing cooperation "in service of stability," while Barzani affirmed the Kurdistan Region's readiness to develop relations and called for a Syria where "the rights of all ethnic and religious communities are protected."
- Ongoing efforts to integrate the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian state remain central to the meeting's significance, though the SDF faces criticism from ordinary Kurds in the diaspora regarding recent negotiations with Al-Sharaa.
