Despite Losing Millions: Barcelona Shock Moroccans with a Surprising Decision
On Thursday, FC Barcelona canceled a friendly match in Tangiers, Morocco, scheduled for August 15, citing "the current context of uncertainty" following a massive migrant surge into Ceuta.
Over the last few days, roughly 78,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, with around 100 people dying in the Mediterranean Sea, according to Ceuta leader Juan Jesus Vivas.
Morocco does not recognize Spanish sovereignty in Ceuta or the North African enclave of Melilla, with some commentators suggesting the mass arrivals were intended to pressure Spain.
Spanish political parties Vox and Sumar called for Morocco to be stripped of its right to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Before opening their La Liga title defense at Elche on August 23, Barcelona is scheduled to play Premier League side Nottingham Forest, Italian team Udinese, and Al Ahly of Egypt.
