Bangladesh Stops Importing Hilsa From India; Dhaka May Not Export Fish to India
The move follows Bangladesh traders importing about 550 metric tonnes of roe-filled hilsa from Gujarat, leaving little time for new festive-season shipments.
- On Tuesday, the Bangladesh government halted Hilsa imports from India and canceled no-objection certificates for 103 fish importers, threatening Kolkata's supply of prized Padma Hilsa ahead of Durga Puja.
- Since 2019, Bangladesh has annually exported thousands of tonnes of Hilsa to India as a diplomatic gesture ahead of the festive season, following a 2012 export ban lifted after bilateral discussions.
- Complicating matters, India recently reversed roles by exporting over 500 metric tonnes of Hilsa to Bangladesh from Gujarat, with Bangladeshi traders importing around 550 metric tonnes of roe-filled fish during August and September.
- Syed Anwar Maqsood, secretary of the Fish Importers Association, confirmed that a delegation visited Dhaka in August to request permission but received no approval from Bangladeshi officials to bring fish to Kolkata.
- With Bangladesh scheduled to impose a seasonal fishing ban starting October 8, traders warn that time has run out to arrange fresh consignments, preventing the arrival of Padma Hilsa for Durga Puja.
