LG, Samsung face India tariff evasion investigation over OLED TV parts
Authorities say the companies claimed a 5% rate on OLED display parts that should have faced 15%, while industry groups lobbied for parity.
Indian authorities are investigating Samsung and another South Korean company for allegedly paying lower import tariffs on OLED display parts instead of the 15 per cent rate authorities believe applies.
Industry groups including the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association and MAIT argue the tariff law creates an "anomalous situation," contending OLED is an advanced form of LED technology deserving lower rates.
Directorate officials visited Samsung's Gurugram headquarters for questioning in recent weeks, while the other company submitted written responses with a voluntary monetary deposit; both firms hold nearly 59 per cent of India's OLED TV market share.
Authorities could issue tax demand notices and impose penalties of up to 100 per cent of duty evaded following investigation, though Samsung stated it is "reviewing the matter and cooperating fully with relevant authorities."
India's imports of display parts rose 15 per cent to $5.6 billion by March 2026, highlighting reliance on overseas supplies as industry lobbyists warn tariff disparities hamper higher-technology OLED manufacturing growth.
