PD: Apache Junction Officer Resigns After Misusing Flock Cameras to Track Wife
The officer was placed on administrative leave after dispatchers and another agency flagged the request, officials said.
Officer Joshua McDaniel resigned from the Apache Junction Police Department before termination proceedings concluded, following an internal investigation that found he misused Flock Automated License Plate Reader technology to track his wife.
Disguising his intent as a 'wellness check,' McDaniel contacted Apache Junction dispatchers and the Casa Grande Police Department to track his wife's vehicle, prompting both agencies to flag concerns and notify his superiors.
Apache Junction Chief of Police Michael Pooley stated the investigation concluded two weeks ago, noting that McDaniel would have been fired otherwise; Pooley described him as 'a good officer' despite the overreach.
Across Arizona, scrutiny of Flock technology has intensified, with Chandler Police discontinuing its contract after an identified 'anomaly' on Friday and Goodyear Police investigating a separate potential misuse.
Despite the recent incident, Apache Junction will continue utilizing Flock cameras, as Pooley argued the technology remains essential for solving crimes and locating missing individuals.
