Anambra govt still repaying loans taken under Peter Obi, Willie Obiano – Soludo
Commissioner Izuchukwu Okafor says 83% of the state debt burden has been reduced while legacy loans and deductions from federal allocations continue.
- On Sunday, Anambra State Commissioner for Finance Izuchukwu Okafor revealed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo's administration is servicing legacy debts from former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano without taking new commercial loans.
- Okafor claimed the state has reduced its debt burden by more than 83 per cent, noting that Federation Account Allocation Committee funds are automatically deducted monthly to service inherited external loans.
- The administration has cleared legacy domestic debts, including unpaid contracts, gratuity, and pension arrears; consequently, the state's domestic debt now stands at a "near-zero balance," Okafor said.
- Reacting to the claims, former Governor Peter Obi stated he left office nearly 13 years ago without owing salaries, pensions, or contractors, challenging officials to investigate his record.
- Obi also asserted he left $150 million in investments across Access, Diamond, and Fidelity banks when exiting office, underscoring the competing financial claims between the administrations.
