Malaysia begins screening 5,000 refugees for their planned return to Myanmar
The agreement follows detentions of more than 100 Rohingya in Kuala Lumpur and comes after Myanmar had previously refused returns.
- On Wednesday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Myanmar has agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya refugees currently in Malaysia following bilateral discussions between the two countries.
- Malaysia currently hosts more than 126,000 Rohingya refugees, yet remains a non-signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and does not formally recognize refugee status.
- Malaysian authorities detained more than 100 Rohingya refugees outside a United Nations facility in Kuala Lumpur days earlier, though officials confirmed detainees held valid documentation from the High Commissioner.
- Officials released the detainees to various locations across Malaysia after verification, marking a policy shift since Myanmar previously refused to accept the group before Anwar secured the agreement.
- Many Rohingya fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar, an event now subject to a genocide case at the United Nations court in The Hague.
