Amid strike threat, Fin Secy Sanjay Lohia calls bank chiefs' meet to ensure services
On Saturday, the State Bank of India issued an advisory urging customers to complete time-sensitive transactions before a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions from September 28 to 30.
The UFBU, representing around 90 per cent of the banking workforce, is striking to press demands including a five-day banking week, improved pension benefits, and allowing employees to switch from the National Pension System to the Old Pension Scheme .
Since the strike dates follow the weekend of September 26 and 27, customers could face banking service disruptions for several consecutive days; the unions previously observed a nationwide strike on September 11 to push for these same operational and pension-related goals.
To maintain access, SBI advised customers to use digital channels like Internet Banking, YONO, UPI, and mobile banking, while also recommending ATMs, Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines , and Customer Service Points for essential cash requirements.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has called a meeting with chief executives of public sector banks and regional rural banks on Monday to discuss contingency measures ensuring continuity of essential customer services during the three-day strike.
ABI Bank will be closed for five consecutive days. The bank will remain closed for the next week. Therefore, the bank has advised that if you have any urgent transactions, please complete them immediately.
