Bank Strike September 28-30: Why Will Banks Remain Closed for 3 Days? Check Services that May Be Affected
UFBU said the walkout could disrupt banking services for five days and coincide with the sector’s half-yearly closing.
On Tuesday, the United Forum of Bank Unions decided to proceed with a 3-day nationwide strike beginning September 28, 2026, after a conciliation meeting with the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner remained inconclusive.
Unions representing nearly 90% of bank employees are primarily seeking a five-day banking week, alongside pension reforms and an option to switch from the National Pension System to the old pension scheme.
The Department of Financial Services and Finance Ministry urged unions to defer the strike, stating the five-day proposal is under consideration but requires consultation with various stakeholders before any decision.
Coinciding with the half-yearly closing on September 30, the strike could result in a five-day closure of banking services, disrupting government transactions, business operations, and international banking.
Many public sector banks have advised customers to use mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs, and UPI for essential transactions to mitigate disruptions should the strike proceed as scheduled.
