Amazon enters AI safety fray, calls for "rigorous testing," safeguards

Amazon said AI models should be released only after rigorous testing and safeguards, while declining to back a broader slowdown or say if it will act.

  • Amazon weighed in on Silicon Valley's AI safety debate on Wednesday, stating labs should release models only when they are safe and fully tested, but stopped short of calling for an industry-wide slowdown.
  • Following Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's nearly 4,000-word essay on Saturday calling for slower AI development, the heads of OpenAI, DeepMind, and Microsoft agreed to a more measured approach, marking rare industry unity on safety.
  • The Seattle firm develops AI through Amazon Web Services and an AGI unit powering Alexa, while providing infrastructure via Bedrock. "We don't see it as a choice between progress and safety," a company spokesperson told Reuters.
  • On Tuesday, the CEOs of Nvidia and Meta distanced themselves from other developers, arguing that individual companies bear sole responsibility for assessing and controlling AI risks to mankind.
  • Concerns have reached the White House, though President Donald Trump dismissed safety worries as a hoax. "The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART PRESIDENT," he said.
