FM Flags AI Risks, Calls for Responsible Adoption
She said higher-risk systems need stronger review, as rapid AI and quantum advances could amplify fraud, market shocks and cybersecurity threats.
On Friday, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman warned at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai that AI labs are "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence," urging the industry to build systems that remain accountable and reversible.
The Finance Minister cautioned that while agentic AI accelerates processes, its speed can amplify risks including market shocks and software errors; institutions must balance breakthrough efficiency with robust safety mechanisms.
"AI may assist judgment, but responsibility must remain human and institutional," Sitharaman said, noting that high-risk use cases demand greater scrutiny and clear review, explanation, and appeal processes.
The Finance Minister proposed creating a federated industry platform to provide Indian technology companies with a collective voice in global regulatory discussions regarding licensing and cybersecurity.
"For an Indian technology company seeking to become global, navigating cross-border regulation is no longer a peripheral matter," Sitharaman said, emphasizing this must become central to international growth strategy.
