Africa’s off-grid solar sector courts mainstream investors with landmark financing deals
The deals are testing whether commercial banks and other institutional investors will finance pay-as-you-go solar at scale, with local-currency funding reaching 47.2%.
D.light's $50 million green bond issued in June and Sun King's $286 million securitized debt are testing whether institutional investors will back Africa's off-grid solar sector on a commercial scale.
Both companies operate using a pay-as-you-go model, bundling future customer payments into receivables that serve as collateral for bonds and securities sold to investors for immediate capital.
GOGLA's 2025 Investment Data Report found local-currency investment reached a record 47.2% of funding, with 18 new investors including commercial banks in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar.
Wangari Muchiri, founder of Africa-based RE.Think Energy, called the transactions "an important tipping point," as improved product certification and warranties continue reducing perceived investor risk.
Krishna Swaroop, Sun King's global chief financial officer, cautioned that securitization requires operational experience many smaller firms lack, noting concerns that commercial returns might exclude lowest-income households.
