Accused in Punjab VHP leader's murder case, Sonu Barnala deported to India, arrested by NIA

Harwinder Kumar allegedly provided logistics, financing and weapons support for the Babbar Khalsa International plot, and the NIA has filed three chargesheets.

  • On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency arrested Harwinder Kumar at the Indira Gandhi International Airport following his deportation from the United Arab Emirates in connection with the targeted killing of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that Prabhakar was shot dead by operatives of the banned Babbar Khalsa International in April 2024, an attack allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan-based BKI chief Wadhawa Singh to incite communal unrest.
  • Investigators allege Harwinder acted as a logistics provider and financier for BKI operatives, arranging weapons for shooters. The agency previously arrested Manveer Ram on August 13, 2026, for allegedly supplying the weapons used in the attack.
  • Following his arrest, Harwinder was produced before the Special NIA Court for legal proceedings. The NIA has filed three chargesheets, charging suspects under the Unlawful Activities Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Arms Act.
  • The government's PRAHAAR initiative continues to accelerate the return of wanted terrorists to India, as sustained diplomatic efforts facilitate the return of fugitives involved in ongoing terrorism cases.
