Over 500 Detained in Delhi Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar; AAP Leaders, Students Held
Police detained more than 500 protesters, including AAP leaders and student activists, after they gathered over alleged voter roll irregularities and deletions.
On Friday, Delhi Police detained around 500 protesters, including Aam Aadmi Party leaders and student activists, at Jantar Mantar during a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Political parties and student organizations organized the protest to demand Kumar's resignation, alleging significant irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and mass deletion of voters.
Following the denial of protest permission on Thursday, authorities suspended internet services and closed entry and exit at 12 Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat.
Detentions included AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, while SFI general secretary Aishe Ghosh stated, "This is not democracy." Bharadwaj asserted they were exercising their democratic right.
Around 50-60 people remain gathered at Janpath, continuing protests despite mass detentions and police restrictions across Central Delhi. Organizers have urged supporters to persist with the movement.
Delhi Police has detained AAP leaders as well as activists of several student organisations who were protesting at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
