A serial killer died behind bars in 2023. Investigators believe he had more victims
Investigators are using advanced DNA testing to see whether more than 180 marked map locations connect Carignan to additional unsolved killings.
Sheriff Dean Wyckoff is utilizing advanced forensic technology to extract a DNA profile from physical evidence in the 1972 cold case of Lora Jean Dugan, linking the case to late serial killer Harvey Carignan.
After Carignan's 1974 arrest, investigators discovered a road map in his vehicle marking more than 180 locations across North America, including sites in Washington where two females were found dead.
Carignan's victims included 15-year-old Katherine Sue Miller and 20-year-old Laura Leslie Brock, who vanished after responding to classified ads alongside other young women found dead in Washington.
At age 95, Carignan died in Minnesota's Oak Park Heights prison on March 6, 2023, providing relief to a nursing student survivor who feared his release for nearly 50 years.
Cold cases like Miller's and Brock's remain under investigation as authorities hope new DNA science might finally yield answers to cases that previously stalled due to lack of physical evidence.
