A reshaped Mountain West faces a pivotal season after 5 teams bolt for the Pac-12
The league added North Dakota State, Northern Illinois and UTEP after five schools left for the Pac-12, leaving 10 football members.
The Mountain West conference added North Dakota State, Northern Illinois, and UTEP after five football programs departed for the Pac-12 Conference, dropping from 12 football-playing members to 10.
Amid the conference transition, Commissioner Gloria Nevarez noted the league enters its 28th season at a pivotal moment, with multimedia contracts running through the 2031-32 academic year.
Retaining key talent, UNLV coach Dan Mullen convinced star running back Jai'Den Thomas to remain in Las Vegas, where Thomas rushed for 1,036 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
Projected league leaders include New Mexico, NDSU, and UNLV, which are top contenders with 3-1 odds or better, while Air Force and Hawaii are also expected to be factors.
At NIU, interim head coach Rob Harley took over after Thomas Hammock departed for the Seattle Seahawks in February. Nevarez believes the league remains strong with optimistic industry experts and retained coaching talent.
