Since the introduction of the European parcel tax, Belgian customs has recorded about a 35% decrease in low-cost parcels from outside the EU. That translates to approximately 1.26 million fewer shipments per day. Yet these figures are misleading: it is not true that Belgians are ordering significantly less from Shein and Temu.
The European parcel tax generated 42.5 million euros for the Belgian Treasury in July. This is reported by Het Laatste Nieuws, and customs confirmed the figures to VRT NWS. That is not a spectacular amount, says Kristian Vanderwaeren of customs, although revenues are expected to rise further.
