5 things to know about the Canadian astronaut joining NASA's Crew 13
The Canadian astronaut will conduct health experiments and maintenance work as the first CSA astronaut in NASA's Commercial Crew Program.
- On Monday, the Canadian Space Agency announced Joshua Kutryk will join NASA's SpaceX Crew 13, making him the first Canadian astronaut to participate in NASA's Commercial Crew Program.
- Kutryk will become the fourth Canadian to conduct a long-duration mission at the International Space Station, following David St-Jacques, who returned to Earth in 2019 after a 204-day mission.
- Extensive experience in high-risk environments prepared Kutryk for the mission: he served as a CF-18 fighter pilot in Bagotville, Que., from 2007 to 2011, then worked as a test pilot in Cold Lake, Alta., until 2015.
- During the six-month mission at the International Space Station, the crew will conduct health experiments and maintenance work, continuing Canadian scientific research presence in orbit.
- Support systems are in place: the Canadian Space Agency has established dedicated teams to assist Kutryk's family while his wife is expected to give birth during the six-month mission.
