Charter Boat Hauls in 1,260-Pound Blue Marlin Believed to Be East Coast's Largest Catch
The fish measured more than 11 feet and weighed 1,260 pounds, leaving it 142 pounds shy of the Atlantic blue marlin world record.
- On Wednesday, Captain Damon Sacco and client Walter Chapman landed a 1,260-pound blue marlin off the coast of Falmouth, Massachusetts. The massive billfish, caught by charter boat Castafari, may be the largest Atlantic blue marlin ever recorded off the East Coast.
- Sacco's boat was fishing Atlantis Canyon, an underwater area about 100 miles off Cape Cod. Walt Golet, director of the University of Maine Pelagic Fisheries Lab, noted the species is a seasonal visitor to the Northeast, where cold water makes capturing large specimens rare.
- Measuring more than 11 feet, the marlin weighed 1,260 pounds—just 142 pounds shy of the 1992 world record caught off Brazil. Sacco noted the fish left holes in the boat's transom, which he considers 'war marks' from the three-hour battle.
- When the Castafari returned to the docks in Falmouth Harbor, the landing became a brief spectacle. Onlooker Katie Curran called the catch 'spectacular,' while Chapman shared the meat and sent the fish's head to UMaine for age analysis.
- Golet, analyzing the fish's head to determine its age, estimates it could be between 25 and 30 years old. He noted blue marlin exceeding 1,200 pounds are unlikely to be caught in the Atlantic for several years.
