Zimbabwean boat accident death toll rises to 68 as more bodies recovered
Police said 22 bodies were recovered as search teams continued to identify victims and determine how many children were aboard.
Police confirmed the death toll from the Lake Kariba ferry accident reached 80 on Sunday, August 16, 2026, following the recovery of eight more bodies.
Operating in turbulent waters on Tuesday, the ferry run by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency capsized; officials reported it was authorized for 90 passengers but carried 114 adults and five crew members.
Most passengers were villagers and fish traders from the Chalala fishing camp; the youngest victim identified was one-year-old Wendy Ndandarika.
Hundreds of people gathered at the district hospital in Kariba on Saturday to identify their relatives, while the civil protection unit reported 77 survivors were rescued on Wednesday.
With an estimated 157 people aboard, the incident is believed to be the deadliest ferry accident in Zimbabwe's history, occurring on the border with Zambia.
