Zelenskyy Signs New Sanctions Package, Including Against Entities From Belarus
The package targets 23 shadow fleet vessels and officials tied to child removals, while Kyiv says some listed figures were already sanctioned by partners.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced new sanctions on Thursday targeting Russian entities involved in abducting Ukrainian children and vessels of Russia's "shadow fleet."
While Ukraine tightened measures, the United States softened Belarus sanctions four times since September, including March 2026 relief for Belaruskali and Belinvestbank, which Aliaksandr Lukashenka called part of a "big deal."
Belpol, a group of former Belarusian security officers who defected after the 2020 crackdown, warned that sanctions relief funds Russia's war; Belinvestbank provides loans for 152mm artillery shells and 122mm rockets.
Although Minsk released 250 prisoners, including journalist Katsyaryna Andreyeva, the Lithuanian Defence Ministry concludes Belarus uses these gestures to charm the West while continuing to host Russian Shahed drone relays.
Zelenskyy stated, "We are working to synchronize all our sanctions regimes," yet discrepancies persist as each U.S. relief round signals to Moscow that trading prisoners for resources remains viable.
