Zelenskiy Accuses Russia of Spurning Proposed Ceasefire
Zelenskiy said Russia carried out 1,820 violations as air strikes and drone attacks hit cities and killed civilians despite the proposed truce.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Russia committed 1,820 ceasefire violations, describing the ongoing aggression as Moscow's "obvious spurning" of peace efforts.
Tensions escalated after Zelenskiy floated a cessation starting Wednesday, responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposed ceasefire from May 8-9 to coincide with World War II Victory Day commemorations.
Attacks on Tuesday in Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, and Zaporizhzhia killed 12 people, while separate Russian drone strikes in the Sumy region killed two, officials said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense warned of a "massive missile attack" on Kyiv, urging diplomatic staff to evacuate, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha argued Putin prioritizes military parades over lives.
Citing Ukrainian intelligence, Zelenskiy noted Russia is concentrating air defenses around Moscow, a shift that "creates additional opportunities" for long-range strikes as US-backed peace talks remain stalled.
The ceasefire proclaimed by Kiev in the Ukraine war has not yet worked. While Selensky Moscow is still setting a probation period, sharp threats come from the Russian capital.
