Zelenskiy, Wall St Execs Discuss Ukraine Reconstruction
On Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met senior Wall Street executives in New York City during the 81st United Nations General Assembly to discuss strategies for propelling Ukraine's economy despite the ongoing war.
With the daily cost of the war reaching about $190 million this year, Ukraine faces a brutal winter as Russian strikes on infrastructure and export industries deepen the country's budget crisis.
Citigroup and the US Chamber of Commerce facilitated the meeting, which featured executives from firms including BlackRock and Lazard. Citi head of public-sector banking Stephanie Von Friedeburg stated the gathering aimed to show "that investments can still flow during war."
Participants discussed establishing a sovereign wealth fund and strengthening the economy with support from the International Advisory Group. US government representatives, including International Development Finance Corporation head Ben Black, joined to discuss war insurance and existing investments.
Russian drone and missile strikes killed eight people on Thursday in attacks that included a maternity hospital and a farm. Zelenskyy reported on Telegram that two people died in the latest assault on Kyiv, illustrating persistent danger facing the country.
