Will Iceland join the European Union? Icelanders will decide in a referendum tomorrow whether to resume stalled membership talks with the Union. It would be the first enlargement to include a Western country since 1995 (not counting Malta). Léa Marchal writes from Brussels about why this is interesting.
Iceland will vote on whether to enter into negotiations with the EU about future membership, economic challenges for the country are one of the biggest reasons why more people are now considering joining.
“Of course I’m going to say yes,” a 99-year-old man told me on the phone this week. He added that some of his friends were worried that Iceland would be sold on a silver platter to foreign powers that wanted everything we thought we wanted.
On 29 August, Icelanders will decide – or not – to resume negotiations to join the European Union. But this historic referendum is extremely cleavage. In Reykjavik, where the Austrian daily newspaper "Kurier" has gone, we expect only one thing: that the debates will calm down and that the island will regain its usual calm.
