Google Turns Ordinary Headphones Into Instant Language Interpreters
Google Translate beta uses Gemini AI to deliver real-time headphone translations preserving tone and cadence, supporting over 70 languages in nearly 20 countries, Google said.
- On Friday, Google began rolling out a beta in the Google Translate app that streams real-time translations into headphones on Android in the U.S., Mexico and India.
- Using Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio, Google says the model preserves tone, emphasis and cadence while parsing idioms, slang and local expressions for natural translations.
- To use it, pair any pair of headphones, open the Translate app and tap the 'Live translate' button to hear real-time audio with fullscreen transcription supporting more than 70 languages.
- Competing with Apple, Google reduces the need for dedicated AI earbuds by supporting general headsets and will add iOS and country support next year, expanding to Germany, Sweden and Taiwan in 2026.
- On the learning front, Google Translate expands language‑learning tools with improved feedback, daily challenges and streak tracking, positioning the app alongside rivals like Duolingo.
