Dannii Minogue’s ‘Heart Is Broken’ After Death of Talent Show Host Johnny Young
The songwriter and television host helped launch Australian stars including Dannii Minogue and Tina Arena, and wrote hit songs such as The Real Thing.
On Friday, Australian music legend Johnny Young died at age 79 following a "very brief battle" with pancreatic cancer, his family revealed.
Young created, hosted, and produced the hit television show Young Talent Time, which ran from 1971 until 1988 and launched stars including Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue.
Born Johnny de Jong in the Netherlands, Young migrated to Australia as a child and became a prolific songwriter, penning "The Real Thing" for Russell Morris and "Smiley" for Ronnie Burns.
Recalling his guidance, Arena described Young as a "father figure" who wanted her "as protected as I possibly could" and taught her discernment as a child.
Young is survived by his wife Marisha, sister Cornelia, daughters Anna and Fleur, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; his family requested privacy and announced memorial details will be released "soon.
