Sky Blues Teen Lands 'Record-Breaking' MLS Transfer
The 17-year-old winger signed a multi-million dollar deal and will stay with Sydney FC on loan for the coming season.
On Monday, the Colorado Rapids confirmed the signing of Sydney FC winger Akol Akon, who will remain on loan with the Sky Blues for the 2026-27 season.
The Major League Soccer club is targeting Australian talent following the successful sale of defender Lucas Herrington to English Premier League side Hull City for $24 million earlier this year.
Akon's reported transfer fee of $1.5 million—rising to $2.5 million—makes him the most expensive teenager ever sold by an Australian club, surpassing the Rapids' initial Herrington outlay.
Head coach Patrick Kisnorbo praised the teenager's 'uncommon physical and competitive maturity,' noting Akon's significant improvement while representing the Sky Blues over the past year.
Following his 18th birthday, Akon will join the Rapids ahead of the 2027-28 MLS season, having consulted with Herrington about what to expect in the United States.
