Pope Leo XIV clarifies reported description of sexual abuse in Church as 'systemic'
On Sunday, victims who met with the pope in France said he had marked a major shift by calling the sexual violence 'systemic.' However, on his flight back to Rome, Leo said that he had been referring to organizations within the Church that, 'at times,' have 'as a system, been abusive.'
The seven people met in Lourdes, victims of sexual abuse within the framework of the church, had evoked a "major awareness" of the pope.
Pope Leo XIV wants to avoid the concept of systemic abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. "Sexual abuse is primarily a human problem," says the Church leader.
In the plane that brought him back to Italy after his visit to France, the sovereign pontiff returned to the term "systemic abuse" used by the victims, which he did not fully share.
On the way to the Vatican, the pope spoke to the journalists about the main themes of his trip to France. He referred in particular to his remarks on sexual violence and stressed the role of individuals rather than on a system.
Leo XIV does not like to speak of system errors in the abuse crimes committed in the Roman Catholic Church, but the Church bears a special responsibility.
