A Bear in Denver? Wildlife Officers Rescue Bear From Platt Park Tree
Wildlife officials said 6,129 bear reports were filed this year as drought and unsecured food draw bears into neighborhoods.
- On Friday morning, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers responded to Denver's Platt Park after a young black bear was spotted in a tree near Louisiana Avenue and Pennsylvania Street.
- Widespread drought conditions have reduced natural food sources, driving bears into neighborhoods as wildlife search for sustenance this year.
- CPW received 6,129 bear conflict reports between January 1 and August 13, nearly double the 3,115 reports from the same period last year, as officers tranquilized the roughly 1.5-year-old, 100-pound male bear.
- Officers safely captured the uninjured animal with Denver police assistance, and CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said the bear is "on his way back to where bears should be — not Denver."
- To prevent future conflicts, CPW advises residents to lock trash receptacles, store animal feed securely, and clean outdoor grills after every use to eliminate odors attracting wildlife.
