DoorDash Launches Retail Returns Service, Self-Designed Drones
DoorDash says the text-ordering preview is in beta for iOS users in the U.S., while drone delivery and retail returns expand its local service.
- On Wednesday, DoorDash announced an AI-powered text-to-order agent for Apple Messages, allowing U.S. customers to join a waitlist to place food orders by texting prompts without opening the app.
- Building on the Ask DoorDash chatbot introduced in June, the agent learns individual preferences, remembers recurring orders like "order my usual," and manages complex group requests with mixed dietary needs.
- Separately, DoorDash will test delivery drones at select Northern California restaurants including Chipotle and Popeyes, claiming around 80 percent of typical orders are "light and small enough for the aircraft to carry safely."
- During a Tuesday media event in San Francisco, DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang launched the DoorDash MCP to automate corporate office restaurant orders and supply restocks on autopilot.
- Starting in November, DoorDash will expand a returns feature across the U.S. where customers can pay $7.99 to have couriers collect items from their door for return to local retailers.
