Yemeni government launches offensive to seize all areas from Iran-backed Houthis
The campaign follows Houthi gains on the Red Sea coast and around Taiz, where more than 145,000 people have fled, UN figures said.
- On Sunday, Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced the start of comprehensive military operations to retake territory held by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
- Following the collapse of the 2022 truce in July, tensions surged as Houthi rebels seized the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, reviving Yemen's civil war.
- Forces "neutralised" 1,747 Houthi members in 1,122 operations, military spokesman Majed Abdullah al-Nuzaili said Monday, targeting artillery and supply lines in Saada, Al-Jawf, and Taiz.
- Rebels have besieged Taiz for more than a decade, and fighting intensified recently with more than 70 people reportedly killed in clashes over the past day, according to AFP.
- This push follows Houthi advances that captured a key road linking Taiz with the government-held city of Aden, effectively isolating the southwestern city as operations continue.
