Yellow Means Creepy: The Color-Coded Anti-Harassment System Used by Restaurant Workers
The three-step policy has cut the worst harassment at Homeroom and is now being adopted by restaurants in the United States and abroad.
- Chef Erin Wade's color-coded harassment system, developed at Homeroom in Oakland, California, has spread nationwide since she published about it in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.
- Following a 2015 assault, Wade and staffers created a three-step system for the nearly 100 employees, categorizing customer behavior as Yellow, Orange, or Red to prompt immediate intervention.
- "Yellow refers to a creepy vibe or unsavory look," Wade explains. Orange means sexual undertones, while Red signals explicit comments or touching, requiring immediate action, "no questions asked."
- The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission adopted the method as a national best practice after consulting with Wade. Recently, she discovered the system in use at True Laurel, a cocktail bar in San Francisco.
- Since Homeroom implemented the system over ten years ago, egregious harassment has ceased to be a problem. Wade believes it is "so effective because it changes the power dynamics at a very basic level.
