Yankees Sign All-Star Reliever Amid Fernando Cruz Injury News
On Wednesday, the New York Yankees placed right-hander Fernando Cruz on the 15-day injured list with elbow discomfort, a day after he struggled in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium.
Struggling since the All-Star break, Cruz allowed a tying two-run homer to Jeremy Pena on Tuesday and became the 17th Yankee to land on the injured list this year, compounding the team's depth challenges.
To address the bullpen gap, the Yankees signed veteran right-hander Michael Fulmer to a contract and transferred reliever Kervin Castro to the 60-day injured list, opening a 40-man roster spot for the newcomer.
Manager Aaron Boone said, "I'm excited to get him here," while Fulmer, who cleared waivers Tuesday, confirmed he was ready to pitch immediately upon joining the active roster Wednesday night.
Lefty Max Fried could return from an elbow bone bruise during Saturday's doubleheader against Boston, while right-hander Clarke Schmidt prepares for a minor league rehab assignment as early as this weekend.
