Intel Greets Memory Apocalypse with Xeon Workstation CPUs
Intel's Xeon 600 series offers up to 86 cores, 8-channel DDR5, and up to 61% multithreaded performance gains, targeting professional workloads with competitive pricing.
- On Monday, Intel unveiled its new Xeon 600-series workstation processors with models spanning up to 86 performance cores, pre-briefed to The Register and expected later this spring.
- Because Intel prioritized datacenter CPU demand, the mid-2024 Xeon W refresh, based on the Xeon 6700P/Granite Rapids platform, supports up to eight DDR5 channels at 6,400–8,000 MT/s.
- With up to 4 TB memory capacity , the Xeon 600 lineup offers 80–128 PCIe 5.0 lanes and a W890 chipset with Wi‑Fi 7.
- The launch places Intel in direct contention with AMD's Threadripper Pro family, offering 4 TB versus 2 TB memory and pricing the Xeon 696X boxed SKU to undercut AMD's 9985WX by $1,900–$2,400.
- Rising memory costs and supply constraints mean system builds could remain prohibitively expensive, as four terabytes of 6,400 MT/s DDR5 RDIMMs cost more than $70,000 and several high-core Xeon 698X SKUs stay limited to OEM and partner system availability.

During CES 2026, Intel’s presentation drew our attention to the launch of a new laptop architecture that did bring something new. Intel Panther Lake proved that they could be much faster than the last generation with a small CPU upgrade, but a very large one in GPU. It seemed that Intel had finally become serious when it came to beating AMD and, at least in laptops if it could. In desktop CPU we will have to wait for Intel Nova Lake for this yea…
