Wyndham Clark has a 6-shot lead shrink to 1 going to the back nine at the US Open
Sam Burns surged with a 50-foot birdie putt as Clark dropped five shots in five holes, leaving the U.S. Open lead at one.
On Sunday, Wyndham Clark saw his six-shot lead at the U.S. Open shrink to just one shot after five holes at Shinnecock Hills, heading to the back nine attempting to avoid losing the largest 54-hole lead in tournament history.
Clark fought his swing and a crowd cheering for Scottie Scheffler, playing the front nine in 3-over par with a 38 that included critical par saves. In five holes, he lost five shots of his six-shot lead.
Sam Burns emerged as the real threat, seeking redemption after missing his chance at Oakmont last year. Burns charged through the front nine with a 50-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole, pulling within one shot of Clark.
Scottie Scheffler made the turn at even par, four shots behind instead of six, though a bogey on the first and bunker save on the third kept him from gaining ground. Joaquin Niemann closed with a 66.
Clark faced historic pressure heading into the final nine holes; no player has ever lost more than a five-shot lead in the U.S. Open, with the previous record set in 1919. The back nine would determine whether he holds or surrenders the championship.
