Ukrainian Drone Operators ‘Easily Defeated’ U.S. Troops in Military Exercise: WSJ

The exercise involved about 3,500 American troops, and Ukrainian drone operators repeatedly forced the U.S. side to adapt its tactics.

  • Ukrainian drone operators reportedly repeatedly detected and virtually destroyed U.S. troops and armored vehicles during the Combined Resolve military exercise in Germany earlier this year.
  • About 3,500 U.S. personnel, primarily from the Army’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, participated in the exercise against a force that included Ukraine’s 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems.
  • Ukrainian reconnaissance drones quickly identified U.S. armored vehicles, after which explosive-dropping and first-person-view drones simulated attacks that forced the American units to be repeatedly “re-spawned” in the exercise.
  • U.S. troops improved during the two-week exercise by dispersing their forces, concealing vehicles and making greater use of electronic warfare and counter-drone systems, according to an Army official.
  • The results highlighted Ukraine’s extensive battlefield experience with drones and prompted the U.S. military to increase efforts to learn from Ukrainian tactics and incorporate them into American training and counter-drone capabilities.
