World Fresh will market two new cherries created at Summerland facility

World Fresh will sell the new dark, sweet varieties as part of a five-variety rollout from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Summerland breeding program.

  • World Fresh Exports Inc is introducing two new dark, sweet cherry varieties, Sansia and Safirah, to global markets. Developed in Summerland, the cherries are part of a five-variety rollout by the Lake Country firm.
  • These new varieties continue a breeding tradition initiated in Summerland in 1968 with the Stella cherry. Today, around 80 per cent of cherries around the world have some heritage linked to Summerland, said Nick Ibuki, business development manager at Summerland Varieties Corp.
  • The Sansia series consists of two mid-season varieties, while the Safirah offers two late-season versions. These new cherries are larger, firmer, and longer-lasting than earlier varieties, harvesting around the same time as the Bing cherry.
  • Sarah Bistritz, World Fresh global sales and operations manager, said these cherries "represent the very best of Canadian breeding and production." The company is authorized to market five varieties, with one remaining unnamed.
  • The rollout is managed by Summerland Varieties Corp., which holds the long-time global master license for the program's innovations. Development occurred through the sweet cherry breeding program at Agri-Food Canada.
