'Wonderful' Fawlty Towers Actress Claire Nielson Dies Aged 89
Scottish actress Claire Nielson, known for her memorable role in the iconic sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at age 89. Fans shared tributes online following news of her passing.
Nielson played the glamorous guest Mrs Hamilton in the famous Waldorf Salad episode, where her husband confronted Basil over the dish. The scenes featured in the second series of the programme.
Previously, Nielson disclosed that her agent expressed fury regarding her accepting the part, fearing it would ruin her career prospects. She said, "I'd always preferred comedy, so I didn't care."
Beyond her iconic sitcom work, Nielson appeared in The Dick Emery Show, Upstairs Downstairs, and Monarch of the Glen, alongside a role in the 1971 film Kidnapped. She co-established the Drama Pool in Stratford-upon-Avon.
In 1994, she married actor Paul Greenwood, known for his portrayal of PC Michael "Rosie" Penrose in the BBC sitcom Rosie. Outside of acting, Nielson was a painter, author, and enthusiastic cook.
