A Woman With Advanced Alzheimer's Began Holding Conversations 19 Hours After Taking Psilocybin Mushrooms
The single-patient case report found the benefits lasted at least a month, but researchers said larger controlled trials are needed to confirm the results.
- A Japanese-American woman in her 80s with Alzheimer's disease for 10 years showed significant improvements in brain function after receiving a 5-gram dose of psilocybin mushrooms, according to a case report published in Frontiers in Neuroscience.
- Following the initial "heroic dose," the patient experienced profuse sweating and a prolonged sleep-like state. Approximately 19 hours later, she "spontaneously initiated autobiographical conversation lasting several hours," the researchers wrote.
- After a second 3-gram dose a month later, the woman maintained restored urinary continence and improved mobility, while describing "emotionally positive imagery involving surfing with her son on a peaceful island."
- Courtney Kloske, director of scientific engagement at the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago, urged caution, stating "much more research is needed in larger, more representative study populations" before drawing conclusions.
- Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel remains "dubious" of the findings due to temporary effects and single-patient scope, as states like Oregon and Colorado expand legal access to psilocybin.
