Adult, Teen Killed in Double Shooting Near Grand Rapids School, Police Say
Police said the suspect was turned away from a soccer game before opening fire, killing a 14-year-old boy and a woman who tried to help.
On Tuesday evening in Grand Rapids, a shooting near Southwest Elementary School killed 39-year-old Savanah Villarreal and a 14-year-old boy; police arrested the suspect after he fled the scene.
Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg said an 18-year-old suspect was turned away from a soccer game at a nearby park, sparking a verbal altercation that led him to pull a firearm and shoot the teen.
Villarreal attempted to verbally assist the juvenile victim during the confrontation before being shot; investigators recovered nine shell casings near Rumsey Street and Oakland Avenue.
Grand Rapids Public Schools closed Southwest Elementary School and Southwest Middle High School on Wednesday to allow the community to process the tragedy, with crisis teams available when classes resume Thursday.
