Woman held captive in basement for 15 years as a girl says police could've protected her more
Griffin says police knew of her escape attempts and should have protected her, as she seeks to revive the department in her civil lawsuit.
On Tuesday, Olivia Griffin appeared before the New Hampshire Supreme Court to appeal a Superior Court judge's decision removing the New Boston Police Department from her civil lawsuit regarding her 15-year basement captivity.
Adopted from China at 14 months old, Griffin was held captive in a basement for 15 years by her adoptive parents, Thomas and Denise Atkocaitis, attempting to escape multiple times before finally fleeing in 2018.
Attorney Michael Lewis argued the department had documented evidence of abuse dating back to 2011, contending officers failed to investigate despite repeated red flags, while New Boston police attorney Brian Cullen disputed a duty of care.
A separate civil case previously awarded Griffin nearly $30 million after both her adoptive parents pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to years of abuse, starvation, and racism she endured.
The court's decision will determine if the police department faces liability for its alleged failure to protect Griffin, whose legal team maintains that documented evidence of abuse was ignored.
