Woman Arrested for Allegedly Starting Freds Mountain Fire
Investigators say the 47-year-old is accused of starting multiple fires as the combined blaze grew to more than 57,000 acres.
On Tuesday, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 47-year-old Christine Mitchell for allegedly starting the Fred Mountain Fire. Investigators said Mitchell left a residence near the 1300 block of Fred Mountain Road and intentionally started multiple fires in the area.
Shortly after the blaze began, Mitchell flagged down responding fire crews and admitted to starting the fire, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. She faces charges of third-degree arson and possession of a controlled substance under 14 grams.
Combined with the Bug Fire, the blaze has consumed more than 57,000 acres along the California-Nevada border. Fire officials reported the flames were 0% contained as of Tuesday evening.
The fire prompted thousands of evacuations in Nevada north of Reno, forcing The Washoe County School District to cancel classes at nine schools on Tuesday. Officials cited evacuation zones and power outages for the closures.
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency Monday for areas impacted by the fires. Separately, the Bureau of Land Management determined the Bug Fire, which originated in Lassen County, California, was also human-caused.
