Court Docs: Babysitter Accused of Kidnapping Young Georgia Sisters After Meeting Their Mom in Pregnancy Facebook Group
Police say the girls were found unharmed in an unclean trailer after a cellphone trace and a baby’s cry led officers to the suspect.
- On Monday, Atlanta police arrested Lakesha Brown after rescuing 4-year-old Zola Cooper and her 11-month-old sister, Norah Cooper, from a locked trailer on Sylvan Road. Officers tracked Brown using FBI cell phone ping technology and heard a child crying before forcing entry.
- Elica Redding met Brown in a Facebook 'pregnancy mom' group roughly a year prior and trusted her to babysit on Saturday. When Redding tried to retrieve her daughters, Brown allegedly claimed they were in state custody or involved in an accident.
- Police described the trailer as 'unclean and unsuitable,' where temperatures reached 97 degrees with no air conditioning. Officers recovered both girls in good health and found no restroom, with the younger child's diaper full.
- Brown waived her first court appearance at Fulton County Jail on Tuesday, facing two counts each of kidnapping and first-degree cruelty to children. Authorities continue investigating whether anyone helped Brown, with the suspect remaining the primary focus.
- Investigations revealed Brown has an outstanding warrant from a 2021 Alabama kidnapping case involving a 4-day-old infant, for which she was released on $100,000 bond. Sheriff Ashley Henson also noted a separate Paulding County investigation into false pregnancy claims.
