Woman, 24, Left in Hospital with 'Oxygen Mask Not Connected' Dies
The inquest heard staff gave her an unconnected oxygen mask and left her in a corridor despite low blood oxygen and a high heart rate.
Clarissa Street, 24, was admitted to Royal Oldham Hospital on August 13, 2024, after experiencing dizziness and passing out due to a pulmonary embolism and died early on August 14, 2024.
Paramedics initially thought Clarissa was overreacting and having a panic attack, and she was left in a corridor with an oxygen mask that was not connected to any supply for about an hour despite low oxygen levels and a high heart rate.
Nurse Michelle Neale acknowledged that giving Clarissa a disconnected oxygen mask was inappropriate but believed it helped regulate her breathing, and a senior nurse decided to keep an eye on her because she was young.
Clarissa had a history of a provoked pulmonary embolism in 2017 and intermittent anticoagulant use; her 2024 embolism was unprovoked, and further haematology tests might have revealed contributing factors.
