Measles Cases Rising in Southwestern Wisconsin: DHS
Wisconsin health officials said two counties reported new cases as the outbreak climbed to 41 confirmed and seven probable infections.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Friday that measles cases in southwestern Wisconsin have climbed to 41 confirmed and seven probable cases across Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette counties.
State officials noted that cases appear to be spreading between acquaintances rather than through public exposure, with 44% of infections involving adults and 44% affecting children aged 5 to 17.
The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is 97% effective at preventing the disease, health officials say; symptoms often include a high fever exceeding 104 degrees and a red rash.
Residents can verify their immunity status through the Wisconsin Immunization Registry or by contacting a provider; anyone developing symptoms should stay home and call a clinic or dial 211.
Nationwide, measles cases have reached their highest level in 35 years, a July federal report found, while officials are currently investigating more than 20 suspected cases in western Wisconsin.
