Winnipeg’s NSL Expansion Franchise to Play Out of New Modular Stadium
The venue will seat more than 4,000 fans and includes premium suites, upgraded lighting and FIFA-grade turf, the league said.
- On Tuesday, the Northern Super League announced its Winnipeg expansion franchise will play at a new modular stadium at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
- The site hosted Canada's first national women's training camp in 1986; the $8.5-million stadium is funded by the federal government, province, and City through the Build Communities Strong Fund.
- Vancouver-Based SixFive Stadium Experience is building the 4,500-seat facility featuring FIFA-grade turf and premium suites. Adam Torpey, the firm's vice-president, stated, "As demand increases, we can add capacity, expand hospitality and introduce new amenities over time."
- Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham said the facility provides the "right scale for professional soccer," while co-founder Desiree Scott remarked the stadium is "so much more than concrete and seats."
- The team is scheduled to begin play next season, with NSL President Christina Litz saying the funding helps Canada "attract and retain the best players in the world.
