EU leaders are under pressure to strike a deal on the next long-term budget, while elections across the bloc could shift the political landscape. In the months ahead, Brussels will also move forward with plans to strengthen competitiveness, advance enlargement and overhaul its institutions.
Although the European Union's next budget, for the period 2028-2034, would be legally due, some countries are not indifferent to whether an agreement can be reached this year or if it is delayed until next year. In 2027, crucial elections will be held in eight key member states - including France, Poland and Spain - which could completely paralyze the negotiating processes in Brussels and lead to governments falling over the budget.
