Following the massive landslides and floods in Nepal caused by the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas due to climate change, there are concerns that countries bordering the South American Andes Mountains may also experience similar types of natural disasters. Massive floods triggered by the collapse of Himalayan glaciers in Nepal have displaced 1.6 million people. National infrastructure, including border checkpoints, water supply systems, and hydroelectric power plants, has been destroyed, and the South Korean Overseas Emergency Relief Team has been dispatched to conduct search and rescue operations.
A massive glacier recently collapsed and plunged into a river valley in Nepal, causing a flash flood. More than a thousand people died and more than four thousand were missing. If a single glacier collapse could cause this much damage, it would be hard to imagine the devastation if 25 percent of the Himalayas were to melt.
